The road climbs out of Kathmandu through terraced hills and thins to a track. The noise drops away — first the horns, then the engines, then the voices — until the only sounds are birdsong and wind through sal trees. The ashram sits on a ridge about fifteen kilometres from the airport but a world apart from it. Inside, the rooms are simple: a bed, a window, clean walls. The yoga hall faces the valley. When you sit cross-legged on the mat and close your eyes, the stillness isn't something you have to work for. It's already there, waiting.

This two-day retreat strips everything back to what matters: your body, your breath, and the quiet space between them. Led by a certified instructor trained in classical Ashtanga yoga, the programme covers Asana (postures), Pranayama (breathing techniques), Dhyana (meditation), and the foundations of Patanjali's Eightfold Path. It's not a fitness class dressed up as spirituality. It's an honest introduction to yoga as a way of living — taught in a setting where the culture of Nepal and the stillness of the hills do half the teaching for you. Whether you're adding this to the start of a longer trip or carving out a weekend for yourself, you'll leave with tools that work long after you've returned home.

What Makes This Retreat Unforgettable

  • Ashram-style simplicity — live as they do at traditional Nepali ashrams, in a serene retreat centre set in the hills roughly 15 km from Kathmandu, where the noise and pace of the city can't reach you.
  • Classical Ashtanga yoga taught properly — not just poses, but the full Eightfold Path including ethical foundations (Yama/Niyama), breathwork (Pranayama), meditation (Dhyana), and the path towards self-awareness (Samadhi).
  • Morning Hatha or Ashtanga-based asana sessions to wake the body, followed by afternoon philosophy discussions and guided meditation rooted in both yogic and Buddhist mindfulness traditions.
  • Perfect for short stays — ideal if you're passing through Kathmandu and want a meaningful yoga experience without committing to a longer retreat.
  • No previous yoga experience needed — the instructor meets you where you are, adapting every session to your level and any physical conditions.
  • Vegetarian meals included, prepared with fresh local ingredients in the ashram kitchen.
  • Just USD 99 for the complete experience — the most affordable way to practise yoga in Nepal with a certified instructor and proper ashram accommodation.

2-Day Retreat Overview

The retreat follows a clear rhythm. Day one begins with your transfer from Kathmandu to the retreat centre, followed by an introductory session where the instructor assesses your experience level and discusses your intentions. The afternoon brings your first full practice — asana, breathwork, and a short meditation. By evening, the pace has already slowed. Dinner is vegetarian, eaten together, and conversation tends to flow naturally toward the questions that brought you here.

Day two opens with a dawn practice — Hatha or Ashtanga-based, depending on the group's energy — followed by a session on yogic philosophy that draws on both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, both of which run deep in Kathmandu's spiritual landscape. The final integration session around midday ties everything together: a guided meditation, a closing breathwork practice, and space to ask the instructor anything. You'll be back in Thamel by early afternoon, carrying a quietness that lasts longer than you'd expect from two days.

Before You Arrive

We recommend arriving in Kathmandu by 4:00 pm the day before the retreat begins. This gives you time for a brief meeting with your guide and ensures a smooth transfer to the retreat centre the following morning.

Your Online Briefing

After you book, we'll send you an email with available times for a video call. This is your chance to discuss yoga experience, any injuries or conditions, and what you hope to gain from the two days. We'll cover what to bring, what to expect, and answer every question.

Your Retreat, Your Way

This is a private retreat. Your group practises with your own instructor, at your own pace. We'll never add strangers to your group. Want a longer morning practice? Prefer more meditation and less philosophy? We adjust everything.

Your Retreat, Our Family

When Hari Lal Simkhada helped international travellers experience the Himalayas in the 1960s, he could not have imagined his grandson would still be doing the same thing six decades later. His son, Ganesh Prasad Simkhada, went on to hold senior positions in Nepal's tourism and mountaineering institutions. Today, Shreejan Simkhada carries that legacy forward as CEO of The Everest Holiday, personally designing every itinerary and hand-picking the instructor for your retreat.

For this yoga retreat, your certified instructor has been personally selected by Shreejan for their depth of knowledge in classical yoga and their ability to teach students of all levels.

Why Yogis Trust Us

Two days, complete transformation. A short retreat doesn't mean a shallow one. Morning sessions, temple visits, meditation at ancient Buddhist sites — we've distilled the essence of Nepal's spiritual power into 48 focused hours.

Kathmandu insiders. Our family has lived here for generations. We take you to the quiet corners of the city where the real spiritual energy lives — away from the tourist crowds.

Solo Travellers Welcome

This retreat is perfect for solo travellers. Most of our guests arrive alone, and the ashram setting creates a natural sense of community from the first session. You can book it privately or let us know and we'll list your date as a fixed departure so other solo yogis can join you. Group size ranges from 1 to 20.

Women travelling solo will find this retreat particularly welcoming. The retreat centre is safe, well-established, and staffed by experienced people. The small group size and contemplative pace create an environment where you can truly let your guard down and be present.

Difficulty: Easy (1 out of 5)

There is no trekking, no hiking, and no physical challenge beyond the yoga practice itself. The retreat centre is at approximately 1,400 m — the same altitude as Kathmandu — so there are no altitude-related concerns. Sessions are adapted to all levels, and your instructor provides modifications for every pose. If you can sit comfortably on a mat and are willing to try, you're ready for this retreat.

Trek With a Purpose — Even Two Days Can Change a Life

In 2019, Shreejan Simkhada and Shamjhana Basukala founded the Nagarjun Learning Center to give back to the communities that shaped their family. Today, 70 children receive free education and hot meals daily at the flagship centre in Saldum Village, Dhading District. The centre has expanded to 7 locations across Nepal, provided free medical care to over 600 people, and brought internet access to 65 children for the first time in their village's history.

A portion of every booking with The Everest Holiday supports the Nagarjun Learning Center, which is verified and listed on the UN Partner Portal. Even a two-day retreat helps change a life.

What Trekkers Say About Us

Detailed Itinerary
Day 01:

Your Kathmandu yoga retreat begins the moment you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport. Our team meets you outside arrivals with a silk khada and drives you to your hotel, where the pace of the next two days immediately shifts from travel stress to calm. After settling in, your yoga instructor meets you at the hotel for an introduction and a gentle first session designed to release the tension of travel.

The evening is free to explore the streets near the hotel or simply rest. Dinner at a nearby restaurant gives you your first taste of Nepali cuisine, setting the tone for a focused, restorative two days ahead.

Day 02:

The transition from city to sanctuary takes less than an hour, but the distance it covers is measured in something other than kilometers. At two o'clock in the afternoon, your guide collects you from Thamel, and a private vehicle carries you through Kathmandu's thinning suburbs, past brick kilns and terraced vegetable plots, and up into the forested hills that encircle the valley. The road narrows, the air cools and sweetens with pine resin, and the noise of the city falls away like a coat you've been wearing for too long. By three o'clock, you arrive at the ashram—a modest compound of stone and timber buildings set in a clearing among trees, with a meditation hall that faces the valley and catches the afternoon light.

Your room is simple: a firm mattress, clean cotton sheets, a wooden shelf, and a window that opens onto the garden. There's no television, no minibar, and the Wi-Fi is deliberately absent. The simplicity is the point. At four o'clock, your first practice begins—a gentle 90-minute session of Hatha yoga and pranayama (breathwork) designed to release the accumulated tension of travel and daily life. The teacher moves slowly through each posture, correcting alignment with soft hands and quiet words, and the breath-focused practice gradually draws your awareness inward, away from the surface chatter of the mind and into the calm space beneath it. Dinner at six-thirty is a satvik meal prepared according to yogic principles: fresh vegetables, lentils, rice, and seasonal fruit—nourishing without heaviness, fuel for the inner work ahead. At seven-thirty, the evening teaching session begins: an introduction to the Eightfold Path of classical yoga, delivered not as an academic lecture but as a living conversation about how ancient wisdom applies to modern life. The session closes with a guided meditation that lowers you gently into the deep silence of the ashram. By nine o'clock, the compound is dark and still, and sleep arrives without effort — the kind of sleep that cities rarely permit.

Essential Information

Requirements for a Visa

Except for Indian citizens, all foreigners need a visa to enter Nepal. When you arrive at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM) in Kathmandu, you can get a tourist visa. You need a passport that is good for at least six months, a passport-sized photo, and cash for the visa cost (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days).

Insurance for travel

You must have full travel insurance. Your coverage must clearly cover emergency medical evacuation, trip cancellation, and adventurous activities, which include planned yoga retreats. Make sure it also covers hospitalization and trip delays.

The Best Time to Go

The best times to go to this retreat are during the nice, dry months of October to November and February to April. The weather in the Kathmandu Valley is pleasant and consistent during these times, with bright skies and comfortable temperatures. This makes it a great time for yoga, meditation, and enjoying the calm ashram setting.

Money and Currency

The Nepalese Rupee (NPR) is the currency used in Nepal. Banks or authorized counters in Kathmandu Airport or Thamel can let you exchange major foreign currencies. There are a lot of ATMs in Kathmandu, but it's a good idea to have enough small bills in NPR for personal needs, tips, or any purchases you might make while you're there. The ashram does not take cards.

Safety and Health

There are no specific immunizations needed to get in; it is a good idea to be up-to-date on your regular vaccines (such as Tetanus and Typhoid). Talk to your doctor before you go.

Before you start yoga, always tell your teacher about any injuries or health problems you already have.

The ashram has drinking water that has been filtered. We suggest that you use a water bottle that you can use again and again to stay hydrated.

Booking and trusting The Everest Holiday

The Everest Holiday is a licensed and bonded travel and tour company in Nepal. We are happy to be a part of the Trekking Agency Association of Nepal (TAAN). We need a little fee in advance to secure your reservation for the 2-day yoga retreat. You can pay the rest of the payment when you get to Kathmandu. After you book, please send us a copy of your passport and travel insurance information.

End of the trip and departure

The last integration session on Day 2, which is about noon, ends the retreat. We will take you back to Thamel, Kathmandu. Please let us know when you are leaving if you have a flight to catch. We can help you get to Tribhuvan International Airport on schedule. There is a traditional farewell meal for this short retreat, but you'll leave with a certificate of participation and a stronger sense of serenity.

The Culture of Tipping

In Nepal, it's normal to tip to show appreciation for good service, although it's not required. You can leave a tip for the yoga teacher and ashram staff all at once at the end of your stay if you want to. You can choose how much to give, and it should show how happy you were with the event.

Facilities and Essentials

Water

Bottled water is widely available throughout the tour route. We recommend carrying a reusable water bottle and refilling it at hotels and restaurants. Avoid drinking untreated tap water. Your guide will ensure safe drinking water is accessible at every stop.

Communication

Mobile coverage and Wi-Fi are generally available throughout this programme. We will provide you with a SIM card in Kathmandu and teach you how to get data and recharge. Your guide carries a mobile phone at all times for coordination and emergencies.

Accommodation

All accommodation is pre-booked and confirmed before departure. The type and standard of accommodation depends on your chosen package tier.

(Note:

Budget: Clean, comfortable guesthouses or hotels with private rooms.

Standard: Well-located hotels with good amenities.

Luxury: The best available accommodation at each location.

Luggage

Your luggage will be transported by vehicle, so there are no strict weight restrictions. You will only need a small daypack for daily activities. Extra baggage can be stored for free at your hotel in Kathmandu.

Travel Essentials

Travel Essentials

Bring copies of your passport, visa, insurance policy, and emergency contact details. Keep digital copies on your phone as well. Your guide will brief you on everything before departure.

Currency Exchange

The Nepali Rupee (NPR) is the local currency. ATMs are available in Kathmandu, Pokhara, and major towns. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels and restaurants but not at smaller shops or on smaller local shops.

We recommend carrying cash in NPR for daily expenses. USD, GBP, EUR, and AUD can be exchanged at banks and money changers in Kathmandu.

Extra Expense

While the package covers most costs, you should budget for personal expenses such as hot showers (NPR 200-500), device charging (NPR 200-500), drinks, snacks, and souvenirs.

At higher altitudes, prices increase. We recommend carrying NPR 20,000-30,000 in cash for extras during your stay. Tips for your yoga instructor are also at your discretion.

TEH Family

The Everest Holiday is more than a trekking company — it is a family. Founded in 2016 by Shreejan Simkhada and Shamjhana Basukala, the company carries forward three generations of Himalayan expertise.

Shreejan’s grandfather, Hari Lal Simkhada, arranged logistics and supported Himalayan expeditions in the 1960s and 1970s. His father, Ganesh Prasad Simkhada, has held senior positions in Nepal’s tourism and mountaineering institutions.

When you trek with us, you are joining this family tradition.

Trip Conclusion

At the end of your trip, we host a farewell dinner at a local restaurant in Kathmandu. It is a relaxed evening to share stories and give us your feedback. On your departure day, we transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport in good time for your flight.

FAQs

Q.1. When is the ideal time of year to go on a yoga retreat in Nepal?

The finest times are from October to November and from February to April, when it is dry and pleasant. The weather in the Kathmandu Valley is bright, sunny, and nice during these months. This is the best time for yoga, meditation, and enjoying the tranquil ashram setting. In the winter (December to January), it can be cold in the mornings and evenings. The monsoon (June to September) brings rain and humidity.

Q.2. Is this two-day retreat good for people who are just starting?

Yes, of course. This retreat is made just for people who are new to yoga or who want to learn more about the deeper parts of it. Our teacher gently leads the group through basic postures, breathing exercises, and meditation. She focuses on awareness and self-discovery instead of advanced physical success.

Q.3. What kind of yoga do they teach?

We teach classical Hatha yoga, which is based on the Eight-Limbed Path (Ashtanga Yoga) that Sage Patanjali spoke about. The practice focuses on combining Asana (postures), Pranayama (breath control), and Dhyana (meditation). It is a real, holistic style that learn from the yogi family. It focuses on alignment, awareness, and spiritual well-being instead of extreme physical flow.

Q.4. What should I wear for yoga?

Wear clothes that are comfortable, modest, and stretchy, such as leggings, t-shirts, or tank tops. These will let you move around easily. Since the ashram is a traditional place, we suggest against wearing excessively short shorts or blouses that show too much skin. For meditation sessions in the early morning and evening when it's cooler, bring a light shawl or sweatshirt.

Q.5. How is a yoga retreat in Nepal different from one in the West?

A retreat in Nepal gives you a real cultural and spiritual setting. You practice in a traditional ashram with a teacher who comes from a family of yogis. The teacher generally combines philosophy and meditation that come from the area's historic traditions. The area itself, which is close to the spiritual birthplace of Buddha and in the foothills of the Himalayas, adds a deep level of peace and sincerity that is unique to Nepal.

Q.6. Should I bring my own yoga mat?

We have basic yoga mats at the ashram. We strongly suggest that you bring your own yoga mat if you can, though, for your own comfort and hygiene.

Q.7. What are the ashram's food and rooms like?

The accommodations are modest, clean, and shared, which is how people really live in an ashram. If you want a separate room, you can ask for one. The food is fresh, vegetarian (Sattvic), and made in a way that follows yogic dietary rules to help you with your practice. The mood is calm and good for thinking.

Q.8. Does the ashram have Wi-Fi or internet access?

The ashram is in a quiet place where the internet is not very good. We want people to see this retreat as a chance to unplug from technology and completely enjoy the present moment, meditation, and being outside. When you get back to Kathmandu, you can use WiFi.

Q.9. What is your policy on cancellations?

To hold your reservation, we need a modest deposit. If you cancel more than 14 days before the retreat starts, you will get your full deposit back, minus any transaction fees. If you need to cancel within 14 days, please get in touch with us directly to talk about your alternatives, which may include getting credit for a future retreat.

Q.10. Do you pick up and drop off at the airport?

Yes, your retreat package includes round-trip transportation between Thamel/Kathmandu and the Badikhel Ashram. Please tell us when and where you will arrive in Kathmandu so we can plan when and where to pick you up.
