The lakes appear without warning. You round a bend in the trail above Namche Bazaar, and the valley opens into something you were not prepared for: turquoise water so vivid it looks painted, held in the palms of the highest mountains on earth. No crowds. No queues. Just you, your guide, and a silence so complete you can hear meltwater trickling beneath the Ngozumpa Glacier.

The 10-day Gokyo Valley Lakes Trek takes you into the quieter side of the Khumbu, where the Sherpa villages are smaller, the teahouses are fewer, and the views are just as staggering as anything on the Everest Base Camp trail. You will walk beneath Cho Oyu (8,201m / 26,906ft), stand on Gokyo Ri (5,357m / 17,575ft) at sunrise with four of the world's fourteen highest peaks visible in a single panorama, and sit beside lakes that few trekkers ever reach. This is the Everest region without the traffic, and most who come here say it is the better route.

What Makes This Trek Unforgettable

  • Stand on Gokyo Ri (5,357m / 17,575ft) at sunrise, where Everest, Lhotse, Makalu, and Cho Oyu fill the horizon in a single sweep
  • Walk alongside the Ngozumpa Glacier, the longest glacier in the Himalayas, stretching over 36 kilometres from the flanks of Cho Oyu
  • See the sacred turquoise Gokyo Lakes, a chain of six high-altitude lakes fed by glacial meltwater, each more vivid than the last
  • Trek through Sagarmatha National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site home to snow leopards, Himalayan tahr, and over 100 bird species
  • Experience the quieter side of the Sherpa homeland, where villages like Machhermo and Dole see a fraction of the foot traffic on the classic EBC route
  • Acclimatise properly in Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 11,286ft), the vibrant Sherpa capital with bakeries, markets, and mountain views from every direction
  • Land at Lukla (2,860m / 9,383ft), one of the world's most dramatic airports, where the runway ends at a mountain wall
  • Cross suspension bridges draped in prayer flags over the Dudh Koshi River, some of the highest in the world
  • Eat dal bhat with families who have lived in these valleys for centuries and learn how the Khumbu changes with each season
  • Complete an Everest region trek in just 10 days, ideal for trekkers with limited time who still want high-altitude Himalayan immersion

10-Day Gokyo Valley Lakes Trek Overview

Ten days. That is all it takes to walk from the airstrip at Lukla to the shores of the most beautiful high-altitude lakes in the Himalayas and stand on a summit with four 8,000-metre peaks in view. Most trekkers who choose Gokyo over Everest Base Camp say the same thing afterwards: they got the better deal.

The route follows the Dudh Koshi River valley through Sagarmatha National Park, climbing from Phakding (2,610m / 8,563ft) through Namche Bazaar (3,440m / 11,286ft), then branching northwest through the quiet villages of Dole (4,200m / 13,780ft) and Machhermo (4,470m / 14,665ft) before reaching Gokyo village at 4,790 metres (15,715ft). This is not the classic EBC trail. Once you leave Namche heading for Dole, the crowds thin dramatically and the landscape shifts from forested valleys to open, windswept terrain beside the Ngozumpa Glacier.

An acclimatisation day at Namche Bazaar lets your body adjust safely before the push to higher ground. On that rest day, you hike to the Everest View Hotel (3,880m / 12,730ft) for your first clear sight of Everest, Lhotse, and Ama Dablam. By the time you reach Gokyo, you are ready for the pre-dawn climb to Gokyo Ri (5,357m / 17,575ft), where the sunrise panorama is one of the finest in Nepal.

The descent retraces through Dole and Namche to Lukla over two efficient days. Your final evening in Kathmandu is a farewell dinner with your guide and team, a chance to look back at a trek that showed you the quieter, wilder, more beautiful side of the Everest region.

Before You Arrive

Please arrive in Kathmandu by 4 PM the day before your trek. This gives you time for a final gear check, a briefing with your guide, and a good night's rest before the early morning start.

Your Online Briefing

Think of this as our first coffee together, but online. After you book, we will schedule a video call where we walk you through every detail: what to pack, what each day on the trail looks like, how the altitude will feel, and anything else on your mind. No question is too small.

This is also when we learn about you. Our trek itinerary does not include your hotel in Kathmandu. During the briefing, share your preferences and budget, and we will arrange accommodation that fits. Whether you want a simple guesthouse in Thamel or a five-star hotel, we will set it up for you.

Lukla Flight — What You Need to Know

The flight to Lukla is one of the most dramatic in the world, a short ride between mountain peaks that ends on a runway carved into a hillside at 2,860m (9,383ft). From Kathmandu, it takes about 40 minutes. From Manthali, it takes about 20 minutes. It is also weather-dependent. Flights can be delayed by fog, cloud, or wind, sometimes for a full day. This is normal in the Himalayas and nothing to worry about, but it is something to plan for.

We strongly recommend keeping two buffer days at the end of your trip before your international flight home. This protects your connection if weather delays your return from Lukla.

During peak trekking season (March to May and October to November), flights to Lukla operate from Manthali Airport (Ramechhap) instead of Kathmandu, to reduce congestion on Kathmandu's single runway. If your flight departs from Manthali, we will pick you up from your hotel around midnight and drive you there (4 to 6 hours).

For your return, you fly from Lukla back to Kathmandu or Manthali. If your return flight lands at Manthali, we drive you back to Kathmandu (4 to 6 hours). All ground transportation is included in every package.

Your Trek, Your Way

Every trek we run is private, your group only, no strangers added. Whether you choose Budget, Standard, or Luxury, the mountains are yours and your companions' alone. This is not a conveyor belt. This is your personal Himalayan experience.

Your hotel in Kathmandu is not included in the trek package, and that is intentional. Kathmandu has everything from USD 10 guesthouses in Thamel to five-star hotels with rooftop views of the city. During the online briefing, tell us what you prefer and we will arrange it for you. Your trek package begins the moment you leave Kathmandu for the mountains.

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (4 out of 5)

You will walk 5 to 7 hours a day over mountain trails, gaining altitude steadily until you reach 5,357m (17,575ft) at Gokyo Ri. The paths are well-established but uneven, with stone steps, river crossings, and steep ascents on most days. No previous trekking experience is required, but you should be comfortable walking for extended periods and be in reasonable physical health. The acclimatisation day at Namche helps your body adjust, and our guides monitor your condition throughout.

Himalayas for Every Budget, same expert guides, same safety, three comfort levels.

Your Trek, Our Family

In the 1960s, Shreejan's grandfather Hari Lal Simkhada helped international travellers experience the Himalayas for the first time, arranging logistics, finding routes, building trust with people who had come halfway around the world on a dream. His son Ganesh went on to hold senior positions at the Nepal Tourism Board and the Nepal Mountaineering Association. And now Shreejan, the third generation, designs every itinerary you see on this website.

This is not a company that was started in a boardroom. It was started on a mountain trail, three generations ago.

Shreejan hand-picks the guide for your group from our team of TAAN-certified mountaineering professionals, people who grew up in these mountains and know every trail, every teahouse owner, and every weather sign. He briefs your guide personally before your trek begins, because your safety and experience are not something we delegate to a system.

Have a question right now? WhatsApp Shreejan directly: +977 9810351300. No sales team. No chatbot. The person who designed your trek answers personally.

Solo Trekkers Welcome

You do not need a travel partner to trek in Nepal. Most of the people who book with us come alone, and by day three on the trail, they are sharing meals, swapping stories, and watching sunrises together like old friends.

Our groups are small, 2 to 20 people, because the Himalayas deserve more than a crowd. You book your trek, and it is yours. We will never add strangers to your group without your permission.

If you want to trek completely privately, you can. If you prefer company, tell us and we will list your dates as a fixed departure on our website so other solo travellers can find you and join. Either way, the trek is built around you.

Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging (4 out of 5)

You need to be comfortable walking 5 to 7 hours per day over uneven terrain with significant altitude gain. The maximum altitude is 5,357m (17,575ft) at Gokyo Ri. No previous trekking experience is required, but a reasonable level of fitness is important. We build one acclimatisation day into the itinerary at Namche Bazaar to help your body adjust safely. Our guides carry a pulse oximeter and monitor your oxygen levels daily.

Trek With a Purpose — Changing the World, One Step at a Time

In 2019, Shreejan and Shamjhana founded the Nagarjun Learning Center in Saldum Village, one of the most remote communities in Nepal's Dhading District, where children had no school after hours, no computers, and limited healthcare. Today, 70 children receive free education and hot meals every school day. The centre has grown to 7 learning centres across Nepal, providing healthcare for 600 people, internet access for 65 children, and empowerment programmes for over 275 women.

A portion of every trek you book funds this work directly. The centre is verified and listed on the United Nations Partner Portal.

When you walk these mountains with us, every step you take helps change a life in rural Nepal. That is what we mean by Trek With a Purpose — Changing the World, One Step at a Time.

Visit the peaceful Thrangu Monastery, hear the extraordinary story of Prince Mahasattva’s sacrifice, and spend the day surrounded by culture, nature, and quiet. This gentle 3–4 hour hike is perfect for anyone who wants a memorable day in the Himalayas.

  • A sacred pilgrimage to Namobuddha Stupa, one of the most important Buddhist monuments in Nepal.
  • A cultural walking trail through terraced farmland and rural communities.
  • A peaceful visit to Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery.
  • Complete nature immersion in the pristine Himalayan foothills.

Dhulikhel Namobuddha Day Hike

The Dhulikhel Namobuddha day hike is a short day adventure that takes you to the historic town of Dhulikhel, located at 1,550m on the Araniko Highway, approximately 30 km east of Kathmandu. The town is known for its traditional Newari temples and houses, and is home to Newar, Brahmin, Tamang, Chhetri, and Dalit communities. We start at 08:00 with a one-hour drive to Dhulikhel, followed by a 4-hour hike to Namobuddha, returning to Kathmandu in the late afternoon around 4–5 pm.

The pilgrimage site of Namobuddha lies about 40 kilometres (25 miles) from Kathmandu, in the Kavre District. It sits on gently elevated land at 1,750m — a quiet, clean place with fresh mountain air and no pollution. According to Buddhist legend, a young prince named Mahasattva offered his body to a starving tigress and her cubs at this very spot, making Namobuddha one of the holiest sites in Buddhist tradition. The surrounding hillside is famous for terraced farms growing rice, mustard, and millet, which you’ll walk through during the hike.

Dhulikhel Namobuddha Day Hike Detailed Itinerary

Day 1: Morning start with a 40 km / 25 mile drive to Dhulikhel, hike to Namobuddha, and drive back to Kathmandu.

Your day starts with an early morning drive from Kathmandu to the historic town of Dhulikhel. The drive takes you through beautiful valleys and typical Nepalese countryside. From Dhulikhel, you’ll walk through terraced fields and peaceful woodlands to the holy pilgrimage site of Namobuddha. The famous Buddhist stupa is rich in history and offers wonderful views of the Himalayan foothills — a place where spirituality and nature come together naturally.

Namobuddha is a revered Buddhist pilgrimage site in the hills of Kavre District. According to tradition, a previous incarnation of the Buddha gave his body to a famished tigress and her cubs at this spot. An ancient stupa with prayer flags and a stone carving commemorates this act of compassion, drawing pilgrims and visitors from around the world. The Thrangu Tashi Yangtse Monastery stands nearby, where monks study and meditate in peaceful surroundings with views of the Himalayas stretching to the horizon.

After visiting the stupa and taking in the tranquil surroundings, you’ll drive back to Kathmandu through Tamang villages and green countryside. This day excursion is an excellent way to experience Nepal’s rich culture and beautiful landscapes — combining light exercise, spiritual discovery, and stunning views, all within easy reach of the capital city.

Want to add this day hike to your trek? Contact us on WhatsApp or mention it during your online briefing. You can also view the full Dhulikhel Namobuddha Day Hike package for more details and pricing.

Essential Information

10 Days Gokyo Lake trek package information

You will land in Kathmandu, Nepal, at Tribhuvan International Airport. We recommend that you arrive in Kathmandu by 4 p.m. at least a day before the trip. It will give you a lot of time to get ready at the last minute. We will drive you to the airport in Kathmandu on the day of your trip so you can travel to Lukla.
During the popular trekking months (March, April, May, September, October, and November), flights to Lukla may leave from Manthali Airport instead of Kathmandu to ease traffic. In this instance, our guide will pick you up from your hotel at about 12:30 a.m. and bring you to Manthali, where you will take a 20-minute flight to Lukla.
During the off-season (December, January, February, June, July, and August), flights leave directly from Kathmandu. On these days, you'll take a 40-minute flight to Lukla. We can arrange to pick you up at Kathmandu Airport early in the morning if necessary.

Note:
Budget package: Your flight will be from either Kathmandu or Manthali to Lukla, depending on flight schedules. If the flight is from Manthali, you’ll travel there by local bus or shared jeep.
Standard package: Your flight to Lukla will also be from Kathmandu or Manthali, but if it’s from Manthali, you’ll be driven there in a private jeep.
Luxury Package: You’ll travel to and from Lukla by helicopter, which offers stunning views and avoids the risk of flight delays or long road travel.

Accommodation

During the journey, you'll stay at a lodge or teahouse for the 9 days. Along the walk, there will be different facilities, such as hot showers, electricity for charging devices, and wifi, but these will cost extra. Please keep in mind that this itinerary does not include lodging in Kathmandu.

Meals

This travel plan includes three meals a day. The menu has a wide range of foods, from traditional Nepali to Asian to Western. We strongly suggest that you eat things that are good for you and keep you hydrated, like fresh vegetables, green tea, hot lemon, ginger tea, and garlic soup. Dal Bhat Tarkari is a cuisine from the area that has lentil soup, rice, and vegetable curry. It's a big supper that will provide you with energy. If you want to be healthy and clean at high altitudes, you should keep away from alcohol, caffeinated drinks, and foods that aren't vegetarian.

Note:
Budget package: This option does not include any meals or drinks, so you will need to pay for food separately.
Standard package: You will receive three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) and a cup of tea or coffee with your meal with seasonal fruits at breakfast.
Luxury package: you will receive three meals a day (breakfast, lunch, and  dinner) with seasonal fruits, dry fruits, and nuts at every meals. You can enjoy tea, coffee, juices, cold drinks, and mineral water anytime, except alcholic drinks. All the extra costs such as hot showers, phone charging, bed heater, and internet are fully covered.

Luggage

During the trek, we will give one porter for two trekkers. The porter can only carry 20 kg, so each person on the hike can only bring 10 kg of luggage. So, get together with friends and family; we put your items in a duffel bag that holds more than sixty liters. We anticipate you to simply bring a small bag with your camera, water, snacks, and other important things. All luggage and gear will be checked before the trek begins.

Note:
Budget package: There are no porters, so you will need to carry your own backpack and belongings throughout the trek.
Standard package: There will be one porter for every two trekkers, who carry up to 20 kg (10 kg per person).
Luxury package: Each trekker has their own personal porter, so you don’t need to carry anything.

Facilities and Essentials

Water

You can purchase bottled water from shops along the trekking route or get safe boiled or filtered water at the lodges. We highly recommend bringing a reusable water bottle and refilling it with boiled water to reduce plastic waste. Avoid drinking untreated tap, river, or well water, as it may cause illness. For extra safety, carry water purification tablets or buy them at local shops along the trail. Staying hydrated is very important at high altitude.

Note:
Budget Package: you need to bring your own refillable water bottle, and you're responsible for getting your water along the trail. You can buy bottled water or pay for warm/boiled water at the lodges, but these are not included in the package.
Standard Package: you will be provided with 2 liters of warm water daily. This helps you stay hydrated safely without needing to buy bottled water frequently. if you want more water or cold drinks, you'll need to buy them yourself.
Luxuxy package: You will have unlimited access to mineral water, coffee, tea, juices, and cold drinks anytime you want, except for alcoholic beverages. There is no need to carry or worry about purifying water yourself.

Communication

We will provide you with a SIM card in Kathmandu and teach you how to get data and recharge cash on it, but mobile signals may be weak at higher altitudes. For your safety, our lead guide keeps daily contact with all trekking teams via mobile. We are fully prepared to handle emergencies, and our guides are trained to provide assistance whenever needed. Additionally, we use walkie-talkies and satellite phones in areas with no network to ensure constant communication.

Note:
Budget package: A SIM card will be provided, and you will be taught how to take a data package and recharge, but the data is not included.
Standard Package: A SIM card with a limited data package already set up everything for you.
Luxury package: A SIM card with an unlimited data package already set up for you. This allows you to connect with family, share your journey online, and check maps and updates without worrying about running out of data.

Travel Essentials

Visa

Foreigners require a visa to enter Nepal, but Indians don't. Most people can get a visa when they arrive at Kathmandu International Airport. The current fee is USD 50 for 30 days, payable in cash. Citizens of China and SAARC countries receive a free visa. If you are a citizen of any country, then you must contact your embassy.

Travel insurance

This trek is easy in terms of hiking, but it takes place at high altitudes, so there is a small risk of altitude sickness and other hazards. Therefore, travel insurance is required. Your policy must cover medical expenses and emergency helicopter rescue up to an altitude of 5500 meters. We ask our clients to provide detailed insurance information before the trek begins. In case of an emergency, we will use your insurance details to arrange a quick evacuation and transfer to medical facilities.

Currency Exchange

The Nepali Rupee (NPR) is the country's official currency; one US dollar is equivalent to around 130 NPR.  In Kathmandu, you may find banks and approved money exchange centers where you can exchange major foreign currencies. ATMs are widely available to withdraw NPR, but extra service fees may apply. Make sure your notes are new and undamaged, as old or torn bills may be refused. Only the 100 INR note from India is legally accepted in Nepal. It’s best to exchange money in Kathmandu before heading to trekking regions, as exchange options in remote areas are limited.

Extra Expense

While our package covers most of your expenses during the trek, you will need to budget for some personal items like meals and accommodation in Kathmandu, visa fees, snacks, hot showers, personal equipment, tips for the crew, etc. We recommend you budget approximately $20 USD per day for these personal expenses during the trek.

Best Time to Trek Gokyo trek—10 days.

The best time to do the Gokyo trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These times of year have the most steady weather and the best views of the mountains, making for a more pleasant and beautiful climb. During the day in the spring, temperatures stay about 20°C, but at night in higher places, they can plummet to about -5°C. In the fall, the days are normally pleasant, reaching 25°C, and the evenings are cool, down to -10°C. During winter (December–February): The weather is cold, especially at higher altitudes, and some trails may be icy or snowy, with temperatures at higher altitudes reaching  15°C, while at night it can drop to -20°C. Fewer trekkers visit, making it quiet and peaceful. In Nepal, June to August is also the rainy season; thus, the path is a little slippery and wet, with temperatures at higher altitudes reaching up to 27°C. The evenings, on the other hand, are fairly moderate, around 5°C.

Flight Delays

Flights between Kathmandu and Lukla depend on the weather and can sometimes be delayed or cancelled. If your flight is cancelled, a helicopter is a possible alternative. A helicopter flight usually costs between $500 to $1,000 USD per person; this price depends on weather and flight availability, and this price is based on a group of five people sharing the cost. To be safe, we highly recommend adding one or two extra days to your travel plans just in case there are any flight delays.

Typical day

We’ll start each morning with an early breakfast. The day’s trek is usually split into two parts: a 3–4-hour trek, followed by a one-hour lunch break, and then a shorter trek in the afternoon. Dinner is served around 7:00 p.m. Afterward, your guide will brief you on the plan for the next day. The rest of the evening is yours to relax, explore the village, or enjoy some downtime with your fellow trekkers.

FAQs

The Gokyo Valley Lakes Trek is rated moderate to challenging. The highest point is Gokyo Ri at 5,357 metres, and most of the trail follows well-established paths through the Khumbu region. Previous trekking experience is helpful but not essential — good general fitness and the ability to walk 5-7 hours a day over uneven terrain is what matters most. Our guides monitor your acclimatisation throughout and adjust the pace as needed.

The best months are October to November (autumn) and March to May (spring). Autumn offers the clearest skies and most stable weather, making it ideal for mountain views from Gokyo Ri. Spring brings warmer temperatures and rhododendron blooms at lower altitudes. December to February is possible but very cold at high altitude, and June to September brings monsoon rain to the lower trail sections.

Yes — the sunrise view from Gokyo Ri (5,357m) is one of the finest panoramas in the Himalayas. You can see four 8,000-metre peaks simultaneously: Everest (8,849m), Lhotse (8,516m), Makalu (8,485m), and Cho Oyu (8,188m). Many trekkers consider this view equal to or better than the view from Kala Patthar on the Everest Base Camp route, with fewer crowds.

You need two permits: the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit and the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality entry permit (which replaced the old TIMS card for the Everest region). Both are included in our package price and arranged by us before departure — you do not need to visit any government offices yourself.

The highest point is Gokyo Ri at 5,357 metres (17,575 feet). The main trail reaches Gokyo village at 4,790 metres, and you can visit up to the Sixth Lake (Gokyo Cho) at approximately 5,000 metres. The trek includes two acclimatisation days built into the itinerary to help your body adjust safely to the altitude.

They are different experiences. The Gokyo Lakes Trek is quieter, with fewer trekkers on the trail, and the turquoise lakes are stunningly beautiful. The Gokyo Ri viewpoint gives you views of four 8,000-metre peaks including Everest. Everest Base Camp takes you closer to Everest itself but is busier. If you want solitude and lake scenery with equally impressive mountain views, Gokyo is the better choice. We also offer a combined EBC with Gokyo via Chola Pass trek if you want both.

Our package includes all teahouse accommodation, all meals during the trek, Sagarmatha National Park permit, a Nepal government well-trained English-speaking guide, one porter per two trekkers, return flights from Kathmandu to Lukla, Kathmandu airport transfers, welcome and farewell dinners, and a first aid kit with pulse oximeter. See the full inclusions list on this page for complete details.

Yes — comprehensive travel insurance is mandatory. Your policy must cover helicopter evacuation and medical treatment to at least 6,000 metres altitude. This is a non-negotiable requirement for all our treks. We recommend World Nomads or Safety Wing for trekkers. If you need help choosing a policy, our team can advise based on your nationality and needs.
