                                             Dashain:  Special festival for Hindus

Dashain; festival of excitement that falls on the period between mid-September to mid-October reminding the end of monsoon season is celebrated throughout the country with great vibes and zeal glorifying the victory of virtues against vices. It is the most auspicious and longest festival of Hindus that runs for fifteen days.  During the festival goddess Durga is worshipped in all manifestations on each day of festival. According to Hindu mythology, god was tortured by demon Mahisasur then goddess Durga killed Mahisasur to release all humans as well as god from the terror of demon Mahisasur.

Dashain longest festival of Nepalese annual calendar is revered all parts of country regardless of their caste and creed. During the festival, market places are crowded with people who are busy to buy clothes as well as other necessary stuffs such as foods, special spices and many more to enjoy the festival. And at the mean time of festival all family members gather at home to celebrate the festival without taking mind how distant they are and how busy they are. During festival children enjoy playing bamboo swing which are called Ping on Nepali and constructed for the special purpose of Dashain and Kites flying whereas elders engage themselves on the game of playing cards with family members and friends. For the Dashain festival special recipe is made by the women members of the family like different varieties of meat items made from the meat of goat that are sacrificed during the festival to pay homage to goddess Durga.

First day of festival is Ghatasthapana. On this day, vessel filled with holy water is established on every household’s prayer room symbolizing goddess Durga is kept on the prayer room. Another special day seventh day is Fulpati when Fulpati are brought from Gorkha durbar the Dashain ghar of Hanuman Dhoka durbar square.  Eighth and ninth day of festival is named as Mahaastami and Mahanawami respectively when animals are slaughtered to pay tribute to goddess Durga. And most of the temples dedicated to Devi are soaked up with blood whereas tenth day is Vijaya Dashami. On this auspicious day, Tika made up with mixture of rice, yogurt and vermilion powder is taken by junior members of family from the hands of elders as blessing from Goddess Durga.
